A sender ID is the name shown on the recipient’s handset instead of a phone number. Every message must go out under one that is registered to your account and approved.

Rules

  • Maximum 11 characters.
  • Must represent a name, brand, or organisation you are entitled to use. Sender IDs that appear to impersonate another party are rejected.
  • Approval is not instant — it is reviewed, and the mobile networks and TCRA can refuse or withdraw one at any time.
A sender ID is registered with a purpose, and it matters for delivery:
  • TRANSACTIONAL — receipts, confirmations, one-time passcodes.
  • PROMOTIONAL — marketing.
Networks treat the two differently, and promotional traffic is filtered more aggressively. Sending one-time passcodes under a promotional sender ID is a common cause of poor delivery.
